The
Astrological Sun - The Heart of Gold
|
"An
archetypal content expresses itself, first and foremost,
in metaphors. If
such a content should speak of the Sun and then identify
it with the lion, the king, the hoard of gold guarded
by the dragon, or the power that makes for the life
and
health of man... It
is neither the one thing nor the other... but rather
the unknown third thing that finds more or less adequate
expression in all these similes, yet - to the perpetual
vexation of the intellect - remains unknown and not
to be fitted into a formula."

The
Sun
As
recognized in the insightful writings of depth psychologist
Carl G. Jung (quoted just above) - the archetypal energies
of the Sun are reflected by a complex multiplicity of metaphorical
symbols and imagery.
Images
typically associated with the Sun's heart energies are
the
lion, the king, the hoard of gold guarded by the dragon,
and/or the power that makes for the life and health
of man...
The
Sun is all this, and yet it is so much more!
As
Jung wisely pointed out, the Sun (as well as, all other
archetypal images and symbols) - "to the perpetual
vexation of the intellect - remains unknown and not to
be fitted
into
a formula." The very moment we attempt the "flattening
out" of the Sun's rich symbolic meanings - by declaring
with surety
that the Sun is this one single thing - it suddenly confounds
us by becoming yet another unknown third thing.
Yes...
Despite all our best efforts at:
-
Capturing
the Sun's vital heart energies
-
Taming
the shining astrological Sun as if it were a trained
circus lion
-
And/or
packaging up the Sun's mysterious and vital essence into
nice, neat Sun Sign descriptions...
The
warm, shining, life-promoting energies of the astrological
Sun refuse
to be caged in and/or reduced down to nothing more than
cold, dead, mental concepts.

The Birth Chart

In
the astrological birth chart, one of the many things
our birth Sun's heart energies will symbolize is "The
Hero's Journey." The Sun's placement in our birth
chart paradoxically symbolizes both the hero
(and heart) of our personal quest and the treasure
of gold we're questing for...
And
trust me, developing and living out the heart energies
of our birth Sun's placement is a true hero's labor,
fully taking a lifetime to accomplish! |
The
Hero's Journey
There are many hero myths, stories, and legends throughout
history - all of which foretell the grave dangers and risks
involved in the quest for our treasure of gold (contained
in the Sun)... And
according to these legends, a worthy hero must appear who
is equal to the task of rightfully laying claim to the priceless
treasure of gold...
In
the typical “hero’s cycle,” as identified by mythologist
Joseph Campbell, the hero is born an orphan (or fatherless)
and lives
in
the dark, quiet world of the Great Mother.
Call
To Adventure
Then
one day... the hero receives a call to adventure. The hero
heartlessly separates him/herself from the mother, and then
sets out to experience the adventures of the noble quest.
Early
on, in the journey, the hero battles with the color of red
(anger) and continues to encounter the many different shapes
and forms of the “feminine.” All of which the hero does
with less than successful results. The hero then accidentally
stumbles upon the valued object of the quest, only to lose
it again through the blissful, blinding inexperience of
youth.
Many
years will then pass (and many lessons will be learned)
before the hero is once again able to gain access to and
then acquire his/her valued treasure of the quest. Then
the hero victoriously returns to civilization - graciously
sharing with the kingdom, all the many riches, spoils, and
gains that were obtained during the adventures of the quest.
